IWC’s Big Pilot Top Gun is the quintessence of the aviator’s wristwatch, tracing its roots back to a wrist-modified pocket watch from 1940. Protected within the massive 46-mm steel or white gold casing, lies an entirely new movement from IWC, the caliber 51110. This mechanism, the largest self-winding mechanical movement in the world, features the exclusive “Pellaton” system, which incorporates a rocking bar acting in conjunction with jewelled rollers and pawls to facilitate extremely efficient bi-directional winding.
What is more, the 51110 movement of the IWC Big Pilot Top Gun allows for an exceptional 7-day power reserve, and timekeeping is stable to the very end of that duration. IWC ensured that form accompanies function when they designed the head-turning case of the Big Pilot. Crafted in steel or 18K white gold, the massive housing incorporates an additional soft iron shield, protecting the movement against magnetism to an extremely high 32,000 A/m rating.
